How To Design And Build The Perfect Outdoor Kitchen

Friday, October 31st, 2008

An outdoor kitchen is the perfect complement to any house. Not only are you able to cook delicious meals outside in the warm summer evenings but also you will not have to be stuck in the main kitchen, missing all the fun outside.

In 2005, Americans spent nearly $150 billion remodeling their homes and $50 billion of this was spent on exterior living areas, meaning that outdoor kitchens are a hot trend! You will need at least a few thousand dollars before beginning your outdoor kitchen but consider it an investment. Before you rush out to buy materials and appliances, here are some things you should know about outdoor kitchens and their design.

Outdoor Kitchen Design

There are three basic outdoor kitchen designs, which are a L-shaped island, a basic island, and a U-shaped center. A L-shaped island has space for both cooking and preparation. A basic island features a sink, a grill, and a space for preparation. Basic islands tend to be small so if you are going to be cooking for more than a couple of people, you might want to consider another type. A U-shaped center has a grill in the middle and spaces on either side for preparation and serving. This is a handy design if you want to be able to serve food straight from the grill without leaving it. Kitchen

Outdoor Kitchen Cabinets

Remember that outdoor kitchens will be exposed to sunlight, water, and cold temperatures, So you need to use durable materials for the countertops and cabinets. Marble, granite, brick and various manmade materials are good to use. Wood rots easily, especially if left untreated. It is also highly flammable. Outdoor kitchens are supposed to last for many years, so you should invest in the best quality cabinets and countertops you can afford.

Outdoor Kitchen Appliances

The centerpiece of all outdoor kitchens are the grills. You can choose a gas grill or a charcoal grill. Gas grills offer better temperature control but charcoal grills give a better flavor to the food. You will need a waterproof cover for your grill, if it is exposed to the elements. Kitchen

You will also need a kitchen island. These can be bought in one piece or designed yourself. Suitable materials include stone, stainless steel, and stucco. It is handy to have an outdoor sink, which draws from a potable water hose or the house’s water supply. An outdoor refrigerator is another possibility but a refrigerator kept outdoors will have a maximum life span of five years because of the fluctuating outdoor temperatures.

How to Build an Outdoor Kitchen

The first thing to do is plan exactly what you want and need. Also, think about what type of cooking you will do and how often, your budget, whether you want the outdoor kitchen to be a fixture or movable arrangement, how many people you will be feeding and whether the food will be eaten outside or brought in.

When you have a firm idea of what is required, you can either build your own outdoor kitchen or hire a contractor to help. Outdoor kitchens should be near the house so you can bring food in and out but not in an area where smoke will blow into the house or into the faces of your guests. Other safety precautions include making sure the grill is a comfortable thirty-six inches high and not using any flammable materials in your outdoor kitchen construction.

Once you have your plans and materials ready, it is time to build the perfect outdoor kitchen, where your family and friends will enjoy making delicious meals for many years! Kitchen

An Interesting Twist On The Home Décor Product

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

There are many options available when considering the style of home d?cor products for your build a house project to use in redecorating a living space. A great suggestion for a theme is to “get twisted” and think about wrought iron.

Many people think about railings when they hear wrought iron, on a lovely spiral staircase or adorning the perimeter of an outdoor deck. Wrought iron railings are beautiful, but there is so much more you can do with this material. In fact, there are so many home d?cor products available in wrought iron today; you could conceivable redo your entire house or apartment in this style.

Making a Grand Entrance – From Door to Living Room

Rustic coat racks in your entryway coupled with a matching plant stand cradling a hearty bush will be great home d?cor products that can offer a rugged elegance as well as a warm welcome to guests coming into your home. As you move into the living room, stay consistent with the iron color that you are using, whether it is black, white or green. Your d?cor in this room could begin with a glass-top coffee table and matching end tables. You could add a full entertainment center or just a simple magazine rack. A few carefully placed photo frames using the same material, and you’ve successfully tied together the room that is used most for entertaining.

Moving to the Kitchen

In the kitchen plan you can deviate a little from the style of the other rooms if you choose. Wicker-shelved wrought iron furniture accents can look especially attractive in this room. The wicker will provide a hand-crafted look that will give the kitchen a more comfortable and cozy look. The biggest home d?cor product in the kitchen would probably be the baker’s rack, which is a great focal point and provides a good spot for your smaller accents like salt and pepper shakers and a sugar bowl. You could even buy a wine rack to coordinate with your baker’s rack for additional storage in another great home d?cor product.

Finish with the Bathroom

With all the amazing pieces you’ve spread throughout your home, a few small and simple wrought iron home d?cor products in the bathroom and basement will unite your entire living space. If you don’t have a whole lot of space for storage in your bathroom, adding a shelf over the toilet is a necessity. If you are lucky enough to have all the storage you need, you can still add accents like a towel rack, or some decorative hooks to give a designer touch to this final room.

Change The Look Of Your Home With Some New Home Décor Furniture

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

What is a home or basement without furniture? You know when it is time to get some new home d?cor furniture when your kitchen chairs become creaky and your couch becomes threadbare. Luckily, there are a few ideas you can implement in your search for new home d?cor furniture.

New Home D?cor Furniture for the Kitchen

No one enjoys eating on an unsteady table and rickety chairs. Luckily, there are many options to choose from when you are looking for a new kitchen set. For a fancier look, get a table with a glass top and pair it with minimally cushioned kitchen chairs. For a more country look, get a nice oak table and pair it with oak chairs that have nice soft cushioning.

Some kitchens have an island in the middle of them. These islands can be used as extra cooking space, but they can also serve as additional seating when you have guests over. Be sure to include some stools for the island as part of the new home d?cor furniture for the kitchen. Just be sure that they have backs!

New Home D?cor Furniture for the Family Room

When it comes to getting new home and kitchen plan d?cor furniture for the family room, getting a couch is a must. There are several types of couches you can choose from, including ones that have recliners. The length and type of couch you choose depends on the size of your family, and how much you entertain. However, be sure that the couch is comfortable, but not too soft, as that doesn’t provide adequate back support.

A couch is not the only type of home d?cor furniture that you can add to the family room. Be sure that you have a nice coffee table. For ambience, get two lamps and place them at alternate sides of the room on some nice lamp stands. Also, be sure you have at least one armchair, and be sure that the armchair either has a comfortable footstool or reclines.

New Home D?cor Furniture for the Bathroom

You may not think so, but it is just as important to decorate the bathroom as any other part of the house. The bathroom does not have to be confined to just the basic toilet, sink, and shower or bathtub. For example, if you like to read while in the bathtub, why no put a small bookshelf or magazine rack in there? If you have a larger bathroom, add pieces of furniture to your bathroom that are both functional and look nice.

Get Ideas

To get more new house plan d?cor furniture ideas, visit a local furniture store. It is easier to do that than to shop on the internet, because seeing the furniture in person before purchasing it allows you to test it for comfort and to picture how it would fit in your home. Thus, with the proper planning you are sure to have a home full of comfortable new home d?cor furniture.

Kitchen Cabinet Lighting

Monday, October 27th, 2008

A well-lit cooking area can make the difference between great dinners and questionable cuisine. However, many of today’s kitchen decorating ideas involves dark-colored counter tops and cabinets stained in deep, rich colors. While these features are quite attractive, they can leave your cooking are a little dark. Kitchen cabinet lighting can be the answer to shedding some light on you cooking space.

The common color for rooms in which cooking takes place used to be white, or white. The standard light-colored rooms required relatively little lighting due to the reflective quality of the white appliances and light-colored cabinets. Even the floors were white. There was little use for kitchen cabinet lighting because one light usually produced enough illumination.

During the 1970’s white was replaced with browns, oranges and mustard-yellow colors that gave the room a little character but did little for illuminating the cooking space. This darker lighting scheme paved the way to kitchen cabinet lighting in a round-about way. You can’t cook well if you can’t see well.

The necessity for proper lighting in the cooking space did not immediately lead to kitchen cabinet lighting. Many homeowners in the 1970’s chose to add fluorescent lights to their kitchens and baths to shed some more light into these rooms. Kitchen cabinet lighting became mainstreamed a little later in kitchen decorating ideas.

Many people have difficulty staying in rooms that have fluorescent lights because this type of illumination “moves” or vibrates on the onlookers’ eyes. Most people are not bothered by this but others wind up with awful headaches when exposed to this type of lighting for an extended period of time.

It is unknown whether or not the person who invented kitchen cabinet lighting was bother by fluorescents or not but I would wager to guess that this inventor was not a big fan. Kitchen cabinet lighting serves basically the same function as fluorescent lights. It simply makes the area brighter and lighter without irritating sensitive eyes.

kitchen cabinet lighting has become a mainstay in today’s kitchen. You can choose from a variety of styles and from an array of innovative designs that will make your cooking area attractive as well as functional.

The combination of form and function is an integral part of today’s kitchen design ideas and among those ideas is kitchen cabinet lighting. After all, what is the point of having attractive kitchen decorating ideas put into action if you can’t see them?

Makeing The Most Out Of Bathroom Remodel

Things You Should Know About Paint

Many people purchase cheap paint to save money, however once they start painting they find that the old paint shows through and end up having to put on more paint, because the second coat did not cover the old paint well. The difference in good quality and cheap paint is that the better quality paint has a higher percentage of titanium dioxide, which makes covering old paint much easier. Good quality paint will spread much smoother, and it will splatter less. It also has a much higher resistance to fading.

Remodeling your Bathroom

When purchasing paint you will find that it comes in different sheens. Sheen gives you different degrees of gloss and each type is better for one thing than for another. For instance, a Flat sheen is used more for the ceiling than anything else and is not good for a high traffic wall.

For the bathroom wall that works really well you would want to use a satin or semi gloss paint. They are easy to keep clean, and work very well with small children in the house. You should then use a high gloss paint to do the trim, doors and cabinets, when you are repainting your bathroom.

Small Bathroom Remodeling

You should take great care in choosing the color of the paint that you want to use in your bathroom. Light colors will make the bathroom seem larger than it actually is, and by choosing different hues of that color will add warmth to the bathroom. If you paint your walls white and you want to use a dark color for an accent, be careful, for instance, a white wall with say red accents will reflect the light in the bathroom and may make the walls look pink, and may make the bathroom appear even smaller.

You should always test a small section of the colors that you are going to use on the bathroom first. It has to be done in the bathroom so that you can get the same light accents that you will get once the paint job is finished. You may want to purchase the smallest can of paint that you can for the test, before going all out and purchasing gallons. Good paint is expensive and you would be very upset with yourself if you bought the gallons first, and then discovered that it would not give you the results that you are looking for, once it is used you probably will not get a refund on the paint.

Many people use brushes when painting. I prefer rollers instead because it seems to adhere to the surface much better and does not leave brush marks, however, if you are not careful it can leave roller marks and that would not be good.

For people who do like brushes, one should choose long, dense bristles. Nylon is very good for water-based paint. You will also want to purchase a 3 inch trim brush or smaller. When using rollers, you could get a roller with a 3/8 inch or thicker nap, and a roller for smooth surfaces with a nap of at least ? to 3/8 inch nap.

Before you begin painting, make sure the surface is clean and free from any dirt, and old paint flakes. You should then sand the surface and rewipe it down. Take off any fixtures you can, and tape up the ones that you cannot remove, including any molding that you intend to paint a different color. Some people like to clean the wall with a cleaning solution before painting.

Country Style Curtains Decoration

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

For a lot of homes, country style curtains are the perfect choice. This classic look is warm and welcoming and your guests will feel right at home when surrounded by this decorating component. As far as color and style, there are many options so you might need to take some notes while shopping for country style curtains. Lets start with the fact that you should not try to decorate your place using anything that is too obnoxious. Go with things that will compliment what is there already, rather than things that will stand out and would be too intense for the decorating job that you have previously done on that room. This means have a similar pattern or choose things in similar color that will go well with your d?cor. Unless you are decorating for a birthday party or special occasion, it is a good idea to steer away from bright colors that are more outstanding to the eyes.

The first thing that you might want to consider is color. Different colors offer different experiences for those that see them. You might need to find red gingham country style curtains that excite the appetite or you may opt for soft blue tones that put your guests at ease.

You can be sure that you will find different designs in country style curtains in each tone, but the color scheme is completely up to you. The next consideration is the different styles available in these products. There are many issue to consider and you want to take account of your specific tastes and needs when making a decision.

Kitchen Remodeling Costs

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Our big, old, house has lots of character and potential but it also needs considerable renovations. One of the biggest projects that we are faced with tackling is our Kitchen. My husband and I have lots of fantastic ideas. We very nearly drool when browsing through catalogs and while venturing through the aisles of our local home improvement center. However, typical kitchen remodeling costs are quite simply beyond our reach and we’d had to resort to modifications in our design plans and project scope in order to make this job more realistic.

In our community, there is an organization called Habitat for Humanity. They have a store called Restore that gathers new and used building supplies from manufacturers and construction sites throughout the city. These items are then made available for sale to member of the public at the store.

We have availed ourselves of all sorts of fantastic finds. My husband has made it a practice to visit the store on an almost weekly basis, to keep abreast of what’s in stock and what we can make use of.

To minimize our kitchen remodeling costs, he has cleared a space in our basement and uses this area to collect together items he has purchased (at a fraction of their original cost) at the Restore. So far, he has acquired beautiful slate floor tiles, crown molding, and uniquely curved kitchen drawer fronts. He has collected beautiful brushed metal handles and knobs for a dollar a piece that will complement the decor of the kitchen. He also got enough brand new, natural wood kitchen cabinet doors to equip our Kitchen with plenty of cupboard space.

The Restore also acquires kitchen appliances from time-to-time. We already have a newer dishwasher, however our kitchen and stove will need to be replaced in order to complete our kitchen remodeling. Therefore, my husband keeps his eyes peeled for the perfect set, as he makes his weekly rounds. We are also open to purchasing appliances that are a couple of years old, and we keep watch in our community newspapers and online forums to find the perfect set.

This may be a slower route to getting a beautiful kitchen, but we simply cannot afford to spend well over $10,000 in kitchen remodeling costs. I’m willing to live with a simply functional Kitchen in the meantime, because in the end I know that we will be thrilled with the beauty of your new kitchen, and we’ll have saved a ton of money as well.

Bathroom Remodeling Ideas

Home Bathroom Remodeling Tips and Tricks

These home bathroom remodeling tips and tricks are to help you speed up your remodeling process. This is directed more to the “Do-it-yourself” people out there who had rather do their own repair jobs, rather than using a licensed contractor.

I will give you some tips about repairing small jobs in the bathroom and then I will cover some tips to make your bathroom look larger than it usually is (this area is the one that many people want to know about).

Kids Bathroom Accessories

No matter what size job that you need to repair, you should always inspect the area around the bad area. Write down everything that you think you will need to do to the area, including cleaning the surface, what is involved in the process, make a list of what types of tools you will need to use, and what materials, you think that you will need. This is just a reminder that you can go over and change if you need to. It has been my experience that if I didn’t write it down, I would always forget something at the Home Improvement Store and I would end up making an extra trip, which cost time.

Always check things out on the internet to give you an idea of what is involved in the procedures you are going to do. The reason I say to check your computer first is that it is closer than having to drive to find out what you need to know, however that option is up to you. I find that when I just type in a sentence in the top search bar, and try to explain what it is that I want to do. It will give me a list of websites that I can scroll through, usually there will be a website that has some type of information, which is quite a big help. If you have any trouble, the employees at the Home Improvement Store are there to help you with any questions you may have.

Decorating Small Bathrooms

Now many people ask me about how they can make their small bathroom look larger than what it is. I have had that same situation, so I take them into my bathroom and show them what I have done. The first thing is to paint the walls a pastel color, and add an extra mirror to reflect the light. Then I purchased a 3 shelf storage shelf that goes over the toilet. Then my sink was on one side of the wall and was just more or less a wash basin with a cabinet a around it, I remove the cabinet and built a wall to wall counter, underneath I installed a 3 shelf storage that was 12” wide, and I did this on both sides, in the middle I put 2 long shelves and maneuvered them around the sink drain and water lines. Then I installed doors on the outside of that. At the top of the sink I took the old mirror down and installed a multi-light mirror, which put out more light. In the bathtub/shower I installed a couple of corner shelves, one on each end, and then I put a couple of shelves 2 feet above the tub, and screwed some hooks into the wall to hang scrubies on.

I hope these few home bathroom remodeling tips and tricks have been a big help, and good luck with your bathroom remodeling.
